TheDrHadwenTrustforHumaneResearchDHTisdedicatedtofundingandpromotingthedevelopmentoftechniquesandprocedurestoreplacetheuseofanimalsinbiomedicalresearchandtesting.AnnualReview2009-2010AchievementsandPerformanceTheDHTawarded3newgrantsThecharityhastwoenduringgoalsAttheDHTweaimtoFuturePlansTheDrHadwenTrustgavenancialassistanceof560606to15researchprojectsduringthecourseoftheyear.Theseincludedadvancedbrainimagingtechniquescancertherapykidneyfailurelunginjuryandasthma.Restrictedfundsof6293222009148515wereraisedintheyearand130083200975751wereexpended.49896fora1-yearprojectatShefeldUniversityrelatedtoHuntingdonsdisease38396fora1-yearprojectatLeedsUniversityrelatedtoBreastCancer134050fora3-yearprojectatLiverpoolUniversityrelatedtoBrainInfectionsViralEncephalitisTheDHTcontinuedtopromoteandeducatethewideradoptionofnon-animaltechniquesinthescienticpoliticalandpubliccommunitiesandmadestridesinincreasingmedicalprogressthroughthisinteraction.AsaresulttheDHThasgrownintooneoftheworldsleadingexponentsofnon-animalresearchandisconsultedinternationallyforitsexpertiseinreplacementresearchmethodsbyscientistsgovernmentseducationanimalwelfareorganisationsandindustry.toplayaleadingroleinfundingnon-animalresearch.toadvanceanddevelopwidespreadsupportforthisendeavouralwayswiththevisionofmakingamajorandpracticalcontributiontoadvancemedicalsciencewithoutharmtoanimals.TodothistheDHTsupportsandnanciallyassistsscientiststoimplementexistingtechniquesanddevelopnewoneswhicharemorehuman-relevantandreplaceanimalexperimentstoghtagainsthumanillnesssuchascancerage-relateddiseasesbraintumourskidneyfailureandchildleukaemiatonameafew.Awardgrantstoscientistsinuniversitieshospitalsandresearchorganisations.Followarigorouspeer-reviewedselectionprocedureawardingonlythoseprojectswiththehighestscienticcalibreandthebestpotentialforthereplacementofanimals.TheDrHadwenTrustimplementedastrategicrestructuretoprepareitforitsvigorousplansforthefuturewhichwillincludeContinuingtoawardgrantsforthedevelopmentofcutting-edgeresearchadvancesandinnovationsinpursuitofmorehumanrelevantapproacheswithouttheuseofanimals.WorkingwiththeGovernmentuniversitiesandothereducationalestablishmentswithaviewtoincludingnon-animalresearcheducationandtraininginthecurriculumandbeyond.Continuingtopromotethewideradoptionofnon-animaltechniquesandbeingasignicantplayerintheimplementationofthesetechniquesandcontinuingtoincreasemedicalprogressthroughthisinteractiontosavebothhumanandanimallives.FundedsolelybycharitabledonationstheDHThasawardedgrantstoover140researchprojectsover40yearsforsomeofthemostadvancedandsuccessfulhuman-relatedtechniquesinthemostdiverseareasofmedicalresearch.TheDHTcontinuestobetheUKsleadingcharityprovidinggrantssolelydedicatedtoreplacinganimalsinmedicalresearchandourworkhassavedthelivesofbothhumansandanimals.
