Current research into bone diseases using animals often falls into moderate or substantial severity bands, uses large numbers of animals (including dogs) and the results do not reflect human physiology. This project will work to develop 3D model systems to maintain human bone cells as co-cultures in vitro which will reduce animal suffering, and more accurately represent human bone diseases, enabling researchers world-wide to undertake meaningful bone research using human material.
