Fifty years of research into pain using animals has yielded very few results. The Dr Hadwen Trust-funded project at Manchester has been taking a different approach. The researchers have used functional neuroimaging techniques to identify the brain structures involved in pain perception and begun to determine some of the normal and abnormal mechanisms. This research will benefit patients with many types of chronic pain, including arthritic pain and save many rabbits from pain and suffering.
