A win-win situation
The DHT made a landmark announcement on 16 January, one that has fulfilled one of our major objectives and one that will bring animal replacement science firmly into focus. The Professorial Chair in Animal Replacement Science will be the first chair dedicated to encouraging and stimulating research of the highest quality. It will represent a major stepping-stone towards the creation of a global community of scientists all working towards the development of human-relevant methods and alternatives to animal use in research.
More importantly, it will take this important field into the mainstream and confirm that replacing animals is the direction of travel. More and more, the strong scientific case for alternatives is being accepted as is the need for better science resulting in better human health and more ethical research.
The professorial chair also confirms the commitment of the DHT and Queen Mary towards moving forward and creating a focus on which to build a global community willing to look at what can be done now and what can be done in the future.
Ethically, scientifically and economically, moving towards animal replacement is a win-win situation for everyone and for the preservation of all life.
Now is the time to stop looking backwards. Now is the time to move forward and together find the answers that will cure disease and protect life, both human and animal.
