Foetal studies
Foetal growth and heart disease
1999 – 2002 Southampton University, Dr C Martyn
The structure and elasticity of large conduit arteries in relation to impaired fetal growth.
Development of safe methods of studying the arteries, to reveal developmental factors that underlie the causes of heart disease and stroke in later life. A direct study of humans instead of experimentally restricting the development of rats, guinea pigs, sheep or pigs.
Human placental studies
1996 – 1999 East London University, Prof P Bach
Using donated human placental tissues to study the effects of medicines and chemicals in the test-tube, and improve understanding of placental function. Developing alternatives to studies in pigs, mice and rabbits.
