Liver disease
Liver Cirrhosis
1999 – 2002 Newcastle University, Prof M Bassendine, Dr D Jones & Dr J Palmer
Study of patients and cell cultures to investigate a poorly-understood form of human liver disease (primary biliary cirrhosis) and replace experiments on mice, rats and tissues from dogs. Development of a simple method of testing a patient’s saliva for this form of life-threatening liver disease, one of the most common reasons for liver transplant.
Drug metabolism
1995 – 1998 Aberdeen University, Dr G Hawksworth
Use of human liver tissue samples for studying drug metabolism and toxicity, as an alternative to studies on rats or dogs.
