In vitro culture of Pneumocystis jirovecii. Devising the first-ever test-tube method for culturing Pneumocystis jirovecii (an infectious fungus that grows in the lungs of immunocompromised patients), to replace experiments on infected mice and rats with purposely damaged immune systems.

Fibrosing lung disease

Application of analytical techniques to samples of lung tissue from patients with fibrosing lung disease, to identify genetic risk factors. An alternative to experiements on mice, rats and guinea pigs.
