Global alliance for animals in laboratories
The Dr Hadwen Trust has recently become a formal member of the International Council for Animal Protection in OECD Programmes (ICAPO), working co-operatively with other like-minded organisations in Europe, the United States and Japan to ensure that animals in laboratories have a powerful advocate within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) which co-ordinates international guidelines for chemicals testing.
The aim of ICAPO is to promote new test guidelines that fully incorporate alternative methods that can replace animal use or limit their number where it is unlikely that full replacement will yet be considered an option. ICAPO was formally recognised in 2002, joining other non-governmental organisations as well as industry and environment representatives who already had official status as invited experts to the OECD. The expert contribution of ICAPO has already had a considerable impact on behalf of animals in laboratories, and the Dr Hadwen Trust looks forward to continuing this work now as a full member.
ICAPO’s member organisations are: Animal Alliance of Canada, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, Doris Day Animal League, Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, Eurogroup for Animals, the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments, Japanese Anti-Vivisection Association, the Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
