Quick facts

The Dr Hadwen Trust was founded in 1970 by Sidney Hicks, and named in memory of the physician and anti-vivisectionist Dr Walter Hadwen (1854-1932).

The DHT funds non animal medical research projects across the UK, helping in the fight against diseases such as Cancer, Asthma and Alzheimer’s.

Since 1970 the DHT has funded over 140 projects to replace animal experiments in medical research and has helped to save countless animal lives.

Throughout the 1980s the DHT pioneered cell culture research into Cancer, Diabetes, AIDS, brain and kidney damage. Cell culture is now used in virtually every field of medical research.

In 2009 we received an astonishing 120 grant applications, the highest in the DHT’s history and more than the previous 39 years combined.

To fund research grants the DHT relies solely on donations and legacies. We are not funded by government. To make a donation to help our important work, click here. If you would like information about leaving a legacy click here

The first issue of our newsletter Alternative News was mailed out to supporters in 1981 and is now sent to over 7,000 supporters each quarter.

Thanks to the generosity, hard work and dedication of all the Dr Hadwen Trust’s loyal supporters, volunteers, staff and Trustees, we have become the UK’s leading medical research charity funding exclusively non-animal research techniques to replace animal experiments, benefiting humans and animals alike.
